Comments:
This is the only use of Obverse P2 and first or second use of Reverse 1848 A in 1850.
Reverse 1848 A was used previously in 1848 and 1849 and subsequently in 1851.
It was also used in 1850 to strike all business strike issues.

1850 Obverse P2
We have not had the opportunity to view or photograph an example of this die pair. The only example that we know of
is in the Byron Reed collection, now owned by the city of Omaha, Nebraska. We hope to be able to examine and
photograph this coin at some time in the future.

Reverse 1848 A
This reverse was well-documented in our article in issue #120 of the Gobrecht Journal (reference 11). Most of the
features described for die states a through d of this reverse are gone in 1850. State e exhibits a new major die
line, pictured below, extending through the right side of the horizontal shield lines and across the right shield
border into the feathers. Presence of this die line makes attribution easy.
Reverse 1848 A die line appeared in 1850
Reverse 1848 A Die States
See 1849 OC-1 for a full description of die states a through d. Only die state e has been found in 1850.
State e - A notable die lines slants down through the right side of the horizontal shield lines, extending very
slightly across the shield border and into the feathers on the right. This die line is apparently the result of
work on the die which occurred after its use in 1849 and before its use in 1850.
