Obverse 1

The photo below shows the Obverse 1 attribution grid.

The 4 exhibits minor repunching under the crossbar, seen in the photo below. This diagnostic can be seen even on late die states.

1843 Obverse 1 Repunched 4

Obverse 1 Die States
  1. Perfect Die. In this early die state light die polish lines can be seen extending diagonally up to the left from the denticles, beginning just right of the 3 and extending right to near the toe.
  2. Light clash marks in the field under Miss Liberty's right arm. The marks are doubled and sharp.
  3. The clash marks have been weakened by die polish.
  4. The die has been polished again, almost totally removing evidence of the clash marks and the die polish lines from the denticles right of the 3.

OC-2 has been found with obverse die states c and d.

Reverse A

1843 Reverse A features notable die markers. Numerous light die lines slant very slightly down to the right in the upper part of shield recesses 1, 2, and 3. These lines are most visible in recess #1.

1843 Reverse A Die Lines

A few other light die lines are visible extending from the left side of the eagle’s neck into the field. These lines are much less notable than those in the shield, but can be seen on mid-to high-grade examples under high magnification.

1843 Reverse A Die States
  1. Perfect Die.
  2. Light clash marks. The most notable is a raised line connecting the tip of the upper leaf to the left wing.
  3. The die has been polished. The clash mark from the upper leaf to the wing is gone. The die lines in the shield are weaker. ONE DOL is weak, particularly NE.
  4. A very small rim cud over S_OF.
  5. Very light rim cuds from S2 to the lower arrow tip.

No later die states have been observed.
