Obverse 2

The photo below shows the Obverse 2 attribution grid.

1847 Obverse 2 attribution grid

Obverse 2 exhibits no notable features that support attribution, but none are required since the date position is significantly different from that of obverse 1.

Obverse 2 Die States
  1. Perfect die.
  2. Faint clash marks in the field under Miss Liberty's right arm.
  3. A faint die break across the bottom of the date to the denticles on the left. Die polishing has removed evidence of the clash marks.
The OC-4 die marriage is found with obverse die state c. It may exist with the earlier obverse die state b, but we haven't personally confirmed it.

Reverse C

1847 Reverse C is best identified by the lack of any of the die markers noted for the other 3 reverse dies used for the year. It features NO die lines in the upper parts of shield recesses 1, 2, and 3, and NO upward extensions of the vertical shield lines. It is paired only with Obverse 2 in the OC-4 die marriage.

Reverse C Die States
  1. Perfect die.
No later die states have been observed.

This die marriage is usually seen with counterclockwise die rotation of up to 10 degrees.
