Comments:
   This is the first of two uses of Obverse P1.
Obverse P1 was subsequently used to strike 1857 business strikes.
This is the only use of Reverse 1856 PA in 1857.
Reverse 1856 PA was used to strike original proofs in 1856 and 1858, and to strike proof restrikes in 1851 and 1852.

The date position is similar to obverse 1. The differences are the lack of die lines under the toe and the presence of several lumps on the upper gown. The lumps are noted on the photo below.

No later die states have been observed.


Reverse PA

Reverse 1856 PA was used for all 1856 proofs, then put back into service to strike 1857 proofs. This die exhibits only a few minor markers – lumps on S1 and L, visible in the photos below. The markers are visible on most examples.

The lumps on the L are usually the most visible marker.
