Comments:
This is the only use of Obverse P3 and the second and final use of Reverse 1863 PB in 1864.
Reverse 1863 PB is transitional, first used in 1863 to strike proof die marriage OC-P2.

Obverse P3

Obverse P3 is a low date, a little lower in the field than most. It’s also farther left than any other date in 1864. The following photo shows the Obverse P3 attribution grid.

Obverse P3 Die States
  1. Perfect die.
No later die states have been observed.

Reverse 1863 PB

Reverse 1863 PB shows only very minor die markers. The most notable is the extension of vertical shield line 1-3, which reaches to horizontal line 5. The lowest horizontal shield line extends across the shield border to the left, but doesn’t extend into the wing feathers. Compare to Reverse 1863 PA, which displays only very minor vertical shield line extensions, with the lowest horizontal shield line extending very slightly into the feathers.

This is a rare die marriage. We found only 6 examples offered by Heritage in nearly 20 years of auction records.
