The photo below shows the Obverse 1 attribution grid. This is the only 1872-S obverse die,
so the date position is sufficient for attribution. Any coin exhibiting a different date
position should be considered as suspicious.

Reverse A
The 1872-S Reverse A mintmark location is unique: small, and located very high and far left of centered.

Reverse A also features some minor die markers in the motto that can be used to confirm its attribution.
Die lines are visible on the scroll at the right side of the first T in TRUST and within the upper loop
of the R. A small die pit creates a lump in the motto between S and T. These are indicated by the arrows
on the following photo.
